Addiction Treatment Program Tailored to Fit Your Needs
Most addiction treatment programs including those for opioid addiction are “abstinence-based” programs. This means that other than “detox” the immediate goal is total abstinence from all drugs and even all-psychoactive substances. This approach has its basis in 12-step recovery. If you ask 10 different people involved in 12 step recovery if it’s ok to be on medication after “detox”, you are likely to get 10 different answers ranging from none at all to any that help the individual in recovery. This is usually based on that individuals moral beliefs about addiction and has nothing to do with what has scientific evidence to support its benefit.
Remember, there are no “good” or “bad” substances. They can all become poisons if misused or therapeutic if used in a controlled manor for specific reasons.
Even if total abstinence is an appropriate goal with substances like cocaine, sedatives and alcohol, different drugs require different approaches in regards to the use of medications to assist people with short, intermediate and long term effects of withdrawal and assist them in remaining off the drug they became addicted to. Nowhere is this more evident than in the treatment of opioid addiction. Anyone who treats addiction over a long period of time will hear stories from patients about how they just quit using cocaine or cannabis and even alcohol on their own without any treatment. These same people who come in for help will tell you how many times they have tried to get off opioids without long term success. Many of these people have been in multiple abstinence based treatment programs with little to show for it.
Program Based on Scientific Evidence in Treatment of Addiction
First and foremost our program is based on what the best scientific evidence has to say about the treatment of addiction and opioid addiction in particular. The science on opioid addiction very clearly points to the conclusion that “abstinence based” programs are not effective in the treatment of opioid addiction. Many people including those who work with addicts assume what helps an alcoholic must help an opioid addict. This is completely incorrect.
Does this mean no opioid addict ever beat their addiction on their own or was helped by a support group or 12-step therapy? NO. What it means is that those approaches by themselves have not been shown to alter the course of the person addicted to opioids. Contact us today to learn more about our program or to get started. It’s never too late to start again.
